TAKE NOTE:
Shellac is a perishable product and despite common misconceptions, shellac flakes do NOT last forever. Shellac flakes WILL degrade such that they will no longer dissolve in alcohol.
In excellent storage conditions, shellac flakes can last many years (storage conditions from 40F to 50F at <40% RH are suggested).
However, in poor storage conditions, they can become unuseable in as short as a couple months.
We regularly perform solubility testing of our shellac stock to ensure that it will dissolve in fresh ethanol when we ship it.
We discourage customers from overstocking or hoarding shellac flakes beyond what is expected to be used within a reasonable time.
Our shellac is now heat sealed in clear barrier bags with oxygen absorber and a desiccant packet for improved shelf-life.

Shellac on Maple
In the process of building kitchen cupboards in Cherry and Maple. I tried a few dies and combinations of dies, oils, and stains and concluded, as I often do, that wood looks best in it's natural color. Using Classic core Cherry I sanded lightly with a 320 soft pad on a felt padded block, apply one coat 1lb cut Ultra Blonde, light sand same 320 to remove any grain raise, and apply a second coat. I was working outside on 10 degree Celsius so I was able to work the second coat wet to ensure a nice even application, I sanded with a 320 flat sheet on a felt block a bit aggressively to give a uniform sealed surface. I then applied 2 coats General EnduroVar satin. The result is excellent as it really displays the beauty of the cherry color. I did a similar process on maple for the cabinets, used only one coat of 1 lb mixed half Blonde and half Ultra Blonde. I know EnduroVar does not need or recommend a sealer, I find it pops the grain a bit, adds a slight hue, and reduces the grain raise.
Great!
High quality clean shellac flakes. Dissolves fast in Bio-flame (I found Rona to be the cheapest). Very fresh shellac. Dries to touch in minutes during French polishing (1.5lb cut). I tested it's de-waxed claim by top-coating it with an oil polyurethane and absolutely no adhesion issues; tape and scratch tests passed. Wood Essence even includes a handy cut mixing chart. Fast shipping with tracking!
Wonderful
This shellac mixes and applies great with Methyl Hydrate (Wood Essence says: You can also use Denatured Ethanol 95%, available under the brand name "Bio-Flame Fuel", at Canadian Tire Stores)
